Ceramic Fit Check: Carbide Replacement with Ceramics

In-depth initial assessment: Check whether your machining operations can benefit from ceramic cutting tools.

SPK by CeramTec introduces the Ceramic Fit Check, a new digital evaluation tool designed to help machining experts systematically assess the potential of ceramic cutting materials for their specific application.

What Is the Ceramic Fit Check?

Anyone machining with carbide today will sooner or later ask the question: Is switching to ceramics worth it? The answer is rarely straightforward – it depends on the material, type of machining, cutting conditions, and the specific process objectives.

That is exactly where the SPK Ceramic Fit Check comes in. The tool evaluates each individual application on a technical basis and delivers a well-founded initial assessment – without lengthy preliminary discussions or time-consuming internal research.

What Users Receive

Once the check has been submitted, SPK application experts review the provided information and deliver structured feedback across four areas:

  • Potential assessment: Is ceramic cutting material fundamentally suitable for the application in question?
  • Cutting material direction: Which ceramic family or alternative is technically viable?
  • Machining process: What stability, cutting, or engagement conditions need to be considered?
  • Next evaluation step: Cutting data, tool selection, test proposal, or direct contact with application engineering.

When Is the Fit Check Most Relevant?

The Ceramic Fit Check is particularly valuable when:

  • Carbide is running stably but is approaching its thermal or economic limits
  • Tool life is inconsistent and the root cause is unclear
  • Dry machining is preferred
  • CBN is not the optimal solution, either technically or economically
  • A series process requires higher output
  • The right choice between ceramic, carbide, and CBN has not yet been determined

Ceramics Are Not a Universal Replacement – But Often Underestimated

Ceramic cutting materials are not a blanket replacement for carbide. In the right applications – such as cast iron or HRSA materials – they can enable significantly higher cutting speeds, dry machining, and greater metal removal rates. Modern ceramics, including SiALON and silicon nitride, are also tougher than their reputation suggests and suitable for interrupted cuts.

The SPK Ceramic Fit Check provides a transparent, application-specific foundation for this decision – free from assumptions, but with a clear direction.
