AMB 2026: When the Material Leaves No Room for Compromise
In metalworking, productivity is often determined at an inconspicuous point: where the cutting material meets the workpiece. The challenge becomes particularly demanding when components made from nickel-based alloys need to be manufactured, hardened materials machined, or high material removal rates achieved within short machining times. This is precisely where SPK® by CeramTec comes in.
At AMB in Stuttgart, CeramTec will present high-performance machining solutions from September 15 to 19, 2026, for processes in which standard solutions quickly reach their limits. The focus will be on ceramic cutting materials, CBN solutions and matching tool systems for turning, milling and grooving.
Not Every Tooling Challenge Is a Carbide Challenge
Carbide is the first choice for many applications. However, certain materials and machining tasks call for a closer look: Ceramic cutting materials can demonstrate their strengths particularly when machining cast iron, heat-resistant superalloys – known as HRSA materials – and hardened materials.
At AMB, SPK by CeramTec will make this change in perspective tangible. Rather than simply presenting individual products, the machining experts will show how the cutting material, tool geometry and process parameters need to work together to turn the potential of ceramics into an economically viable manufacturing process.
From Challenging Alloys to Hardened Components
One of the key focuses is the machining of nickel-based alloys. For roughing and semi-finishing, LST 350 is a SiAlON cutting material designed to achieve high material removal rates and shorter machining times – even when machining components with a forging skin. The portfolio is complemented by solid ceramic end mills for high-feed milling. They enable high metal removal rates when machining HRSA materials.
SPK by CeramTec will also present suitable solutions for finishing demanding components: BST 300 is designed for finish turning HRSA components. For hard turning, BHT 315 is used – a CBN cutting material for semi-finishing and finishing hardened components.
For grooving HRSA materials, SPK by CeramTec will also present a tooling system with high-pressure coolant supplied directly through the clamping finger. The process is designed for coolant pressures of up to 200 bar and combines targeted cooling with a tooling system that can be adapted to the specific application.
When Ceramic Becomes a System
The solution is not always limited to the cutting insert itself. With PureCera, SPK by CeramTec will present a ceramic base carrier for CBN inserts with corner tips. The system is designed for rough-finishing and finishing hardened components and highlights one of CeramTec’s central approaches: high-performance machining is created through the interaction of material, carrier, geometry and machine.
This places the application at the center of attention. The decisive question is not: “Which cutting material is fundamentally the best?” It is: “Which solution is right for my specific workpiece, my process and my objectives in terms of tool life, machining time and cost?”
