Piezo-ceramic In-Line sensors help protect dialysis patients

For most people infected by the COVID-19 virus, the disease has no major impact and they fully recover. In seldom and extreme cases of COVID-19, the disease can affect the functioning of vital organs such as the kidneys. The kidneys perform several vital functions as

  • they remove toxic metabolic products and excess water from the body by the urine
  • they produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO) which supports the body to make blood
  • they help to control blood pressure
  • they support to activate vitamin D, which is needed for healthy bones

The functioning of damaged kidneys can be supported by dialysis which mechanically cleans the blood through a filter. Waste products are removed from the blood and the cleaned blood is returned to the body. To support the functioning of dialysis machines, different sensors are used to ensure the effective treatment and the safe return of the blood to the patient.

In tubing leading into and out of the body it is vital that parameters such as air content, pressure and levels are monitored. CeramTec’s Piezo-ceramic In-Line sensors detect air bubbles and measure fluid pressure changes and fluid levels that control the efficiency of the process and protect the patient. Many well-known manufacturers of dialysis machines are therefore sourcing these high precision sensors manufactured in our factory based in Southampton, England, which is ISO13485 certified.

The CeramTec range of medical In-Line sensors offer non-invasive detection of gas bubbles, pressure changes and fluid levels in soft flexible tubing as well as soft or hard body disposable sets and containers.

The CeramTec scope for sensor applications ranges from tuned piezo ceramic discs and plates to a fully functional packaged sensor. The sensors can either be selected from the CeramTec standard range, or can be customized to suit specific OEM needs. Our expert team has a longstanding know-how in developing custom solutions for a wide range of sensor applications.
